Windshield facts

What is a windshield you may ask? It is two pieces of float glass with a plastic laminate sheet sandwiched in between the two panels of glass. The reason for this is SAFETY. Windshields that hold an ASA-1 rating can and must withstand very specific impact ratings. That means that if a stone impacts your windshield it will not permeate the glass even at high speed. The main cause of windshield breakage is due to stones that get trapped in the tire treads of other vehicles that get flung into the air, bounce off the roadway and strike your windshield. The glass, depending on the angle of impact and how fast you are going, can get damaged.

Many people are amazed that one cold winter day or on a hot summer day, they came out to their car and all of a sudden they notice a long crack running through their windshield. It is not a very pleasant experience...they wonder how this happened and become concerned about their safety. Most people ask their glass experts when they go to get it replaced. The answer is simple. The windshield at some point had a bruise or small crack. But do they really need the glass replaced? Many experts tell their customers that the windshield needs to be replaced if a bruise or crack is too large. Are they lying to their customers? Of course not, they simply suggest replacement because they don’t have the tools or the technology to make the repair and guarantee it...glass is very susceptible to sudden changes in temperature. For example, one cold winter morning you get into your car to warm it up. When you started the car you turned on the defroster or heater to remove the ice, snow and frost off your windows. Due to the sudden temperature change and the expansion of the glass, a defect in the glass turns into a large crack. Another scenario is the heat of summer...you drive to the grocery store with the A/C on. You exit the car and shop for an hour or so. The range of temperature went from 60 degrees to say 200 degrees. Again the quick change in temperature turned a tiny rock chip into a huge crack. This is why we recommend that vehicle owners check their windshields for tiny rock chips and any other imperfections prior to hot and cold seasons. Catching these small damages early can save you from costly replacements.

Your Windshield Prevents You From Being Ejected During An Accident

The safest place to be in a car accident is in the vehicle! Your windshield is a barrier that keeps you from being ejected during a collision or roll over. Any occupant ejected from a vehicle is more likely to suffer serious injury or even death. Cracked windshields expose the laminate that joins the two layers of glass together, which results in delamination. This dangerously reduces the structural integrity of the vehicle.

Your Windshield Is A Backstop For Your Airbag

In most new vehicles equipped with airbags, the airbags deploy upwards and bounce off the windshield to protect the occupants in a collision. When the airbags deploy, they do so at 150-200 mph! That’s fast! If a windshield isn’t strong enough-if it is cracked or not properly installed-to absorb the force of a deploying airbag, the airbag will not be able to do what it was designed to do; save lives.

Your Windshield Supports The Roof

Windshields are designed to prevent the roof from crushing in during a vehicle roll over. Industry experts have estimated that windshields provide up to 70% of the vehicle’s structural integrity in a roll over accident. Is there any better reason to promptly repair a crack or rock chip? Is there any better reason to have it professionally repaired?
